“True genius is often misunderstood.”
It is with this sentence pronounced by Laurence Fishburne that the new trailer for Megalopolisby Francis Ford Coppola, which was badly panned by critics when it was presented at the last Cannes Film Festival. Then, excerpts from negative reviews of his classics are shown The Godfather, Apocalypse Now And Dracula.
On Wednesday afternoon, Vulture journalist Bilge Ebiri demonstrated that the review excerpts were fabricated. The journalists cited, including Pauline Kael and Andrew Sarris, did indeed write reviews of the three Coppola films in question, but the words chosen for the trailer are not found in their texts.

The trailer montage then shows Adam Driver, as the main character of Megalopoliswhich ends the whirlwind of disapproving opinions. Finally begins the unveiling of new images of the most recent film of the “visionary screenwriter and director”, almost a minute after its beginning.
The new footage doesn’t reveal much more about the plot than was previously announced. Following a disaster, architect Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver) wants to rebuild New Rome differently. His partner Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), who is also the daughter of Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), asks him what he will do about those who oppose his vision. That’s what we’ll find out on September 27, when the film, which also stars Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter and Dustin Hoffman, hits theaters.
