While the State has recently launched numerous “Clean Place” operations, the rapporteurs of the Senate commission of inquiry believe that the actions are still insufficient. New recommendations have been made to stem drug trafficking.
Hundreds of anti-narcotics police checks, thousands of arrests and several tonnes of drugs seized over several months. The government is increasing “Place Net” operations to combat drug trafficking. But is it really enough? No, for the rapporteurs of the senatorial commission of inquiry, who believe that the State has not measured the extent of the threat. “We expose ourselves to corruption, we expose ourselves to crime and this kind of territorial expansion, this gangrene, which extends from the districts of large cities to the France of sub-prefectures”deplores PS senator Jérôme Durain.
First recommendation, create a national anti-narcotics prosecutor’s office, with specialized judges entirely dedicated to the fight against drug trafficking. The magistrates’ unions approve, provided that the means are put in place. Second proposal, strengthen the anti-narcotics office. Objective, to transform the existing OFAST to make it a real French agency in the fight against drugs, by increasing its staff.
Finally, target traffickers’ money. According to estimates, drug trafficking generates between 3 and 6 billion euros in turnover in France each year. The senators want to systematize investigations into the assets of traffickers and facilitate the judicial freezing of assets, to fight against money laundering.
