Several million people are affected. New confinements have been decreed in several regions in China, while the country records, on Saturday July 16, its highest number of cases of Covid-19 since May. A total of 450 new cases, mostly asymptomatic, have been recorded nationwide.

This increase in contamination has led this week to the adoption of new restrictions in several regions of the country. Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province, ordered its 4.4 million residents on Wednesday to stay at home. One of the counties in Anhui Province (east) has been in lockdown since Friday.

A “Zero Covid” strategy

Earlier in the week, a general lockdown was imposed on Wugang, after a single case of Covid-19 was discovered. In Beihai, Guangxi province, authorities on Saturday announced partial lockdowns in two districts with more than 800,000 residents.

China is the last major country in the world to pursue the goal of eliminating the epidemic through lockdowns, long quarantines and mass testing. The faster-spreading Omicron variant poses a major challenge to China’s “Zero Covid” policy.
