In Afghanistan, a new law bans women from singing, reading poetry or wearing makeup under their full-face veils. The UN mission in the country denounces “gender apartheid”.
A new blanket of silence over Afghanistan, and in particular over women. Three years after their return to power, the Taliban are restricting freedoms even more. Women are banned from making their voices heard in public, from going out with their faces showing, from wearing makeup and perfume. This new law is as if we were really attacking their very existence.“, deplores Chekeba Hachemi, president of the association Afghanistan Libre.
Women are gradually being erased from society. In three years, the Taliban have already banned them from school at the age of 12, banned them from many jobs, and closed beauty salons. Today, the UN says it is concerned about the new law, but NGOs denounce the lack of reaction from the international community.
