In Gironde, the two fires declared on Tuesday July 12 are still not under control. Many villages had to be evacuated because of the flames, which threaten homes. More than 11,000 people in total have been sheltered.
From hour to hour, the fire gains a little more ground, and threatens new homes every day. On the afternoon of Friday July 15, an evacuation operation took place in Saint-Symphorien (Gironde), carried out by the gendarmes and the prefectural agents. The flames approached several remote houses, north of the town. Two tenants are tested by the hasty departure. “Morally exhausted. It’s been going on for a week, and we felt it was coming”says a woman.
His neighbor also had to evacuate. “We took what we could, the main thing, and we’re leaving”, she says. The inhabitants expected to leave sooner or later, because during the night, the neighboring village was emptied of its inhabitants. In the morning, the fire was still visible from the gardens. The fire was fanned all day by the gusts of wind, and continues to progress towards the south of the department.
