The first part of Vice versa, which was released in 2015, had established itself among the biggest hits of the year around the world. A true commercial success, the film was also noticed by critics and those in the world of cinema, notably winning the Oscar for best animated film. In theaters Wednesday June 19.

Nine years later, Vice-Versa 2 already reigns over the box offices. Best start in the United States since barbie released in July 2023, the film is also having the best start in the world for an animated film.

The highly anticipated second opus dives back into the daily life of Riley Andersen. The young girl, now thirteen years old, still lives in San Francisco. She lives with both parents, excels in school, ice hockey and maintains valuable friendships. But his peaceful life is suddenly turned upside down. Riley becomes afraid of people’s gazes, snubs his parents, sometimes reacts with violence. So many changes whose cause is obvious: puberty makes its grand entrance, and, surprise, it arrives with its gang.

As in the first part, Vice-Versa 2 plays with the alternation between scenes from Riley’s real life and those from her inner life. The film in fact shows everything that happens within the adolescent’s brain, represented in the manner of a control tower. At the helm: colorful characters giving substance to an emotion.

In 2015, the public discovered Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust. Vice-Versa 2 presents Anxiety, Boredom, Envy and Embarrassment. Without acting as real antagonists – villains are no longer very trendy at Disney – these four new emotions are the source of real chaos.

The four new emotions to discover in

Long worked on by the studios, the characters of Anxiety, Boredom, Envy and Embarrassment are a real success. Even more caricatured than the primary emotions, more comical perhaps too, these new emotions respond perfectly to adolescent situations and present exciting characteristics. Ennui, dubbed in the original version as in the French version by Adèle Exarchopoulos, does not leave the sofa or her smartphone, and speaks a tasty Franglais, breaking even the communication within Riley’s brain. Other characters, animated with other techniques, also cause boundless amusement.

Vice-Versa 2 brings many new features to the universe of the saga. Emotions first, but also the exploration of other areas of the brain, other principles. With adolescence, the mental universe expands. The very format of the film is changed, Kesley Mann, the director of this second opus, opting for a larger panorama capable of representing more characters at the same time. But despite these contributions, the film takes up the structure of the first film and offers a plot that is almost similar in every way.

This quasi-repetition of the plot, if it can be has initially disappointing, paradoxically succeeds in hitting the mark. Vice-Versa 2 depicts a renewed world, but where continuity takes precedence and where the mistakes of the past can be repeated. Perhaps less touching than the first part, this film arouses other emotions and works more on humor. Nine years later, the universe of Vice versa is still so great and surprising.
