A hundred people are demonstrating again against the UN Conference on Biodiversity (COP15) on Monday evening, decrying the agreement signed at the end of the negotiations. This is the fourth such gathering since the start of the United Nations summit on December 7.
The event titled “COP15 didn’t change anything, capitalists must pay” began at 6 p.m. at Phillips Square, near McGill station. ” capital is destroying the earth, war on capital,” chants the crowd as they make their way to the streets of the city center.
Adopted by consensus overnight from Sunday to Monday, the “Kunming-Montreal Agreement” calls on the international community to protect 30% of natural land and sea environments by 2030. A “step” described as “historic” by Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault.
The anti-capitalist and environmentalist Coalition against COP15, which organized the march, believes that the agreement “completely obscures this idea that what is destructive for biodiversity is the capitalist, colonial and imperialist economic system, which can continue to destroy life unhindered outside protected areas”.
She adds that the implementation of the agreement “requires the displacement […] millions of people from where they live, including many from Indigenous communities,” reads a statement.
