New complex, same pleasure | The Journal of Montreal

HBO may have moved its plot to Italy, but it is with the same pleasure that we stay at white lotus for a second season.

How good it is to find the sweet hospitality of the White Lotus, more than a year after having left it with regret at the end of the first season. This time, we say goodbye to Hawaii and “ciao!” in the warm Sicilian sun and its Apérol Spritz flowing freely in this new complex of the hotel chain.

But if the plot has crossed the Atlantic Ocean to settle in Europe, it is essentially the same fate that awaits both the guests and the staff of this luxurious establishment. Because the mystery lurks there while some vacationers are found dead. How many ? Who ? And under what circumstances? The HBO channel – Crave in Quebec – will tell us the keys to this mystery over the seven episodes, broadcast weekly from Sunday.

successful trip

Let’s say it from the start, the transition to Italy is seamless, its picturesque beauty needing nothing to be ashamed of that of Hawaii. This change of location may be heartbreaking, but it was – and we quickly realize – necessary for this second season of the hit series, recently awarded at the Emmy Awards.

And who says new places also says new distribution. Because if the characters of Tanya McQuoid (fabulous Jennifer Coolidge) and her husband Greg (Jon Gries) activate their loyalty card with a second stay, it’s a new band of characters – and actors – who put their luggage in the rooms of the luxurious establishment: three generations of Italians who have come to tread the soil of their ancestors and two wealthy couples who have come to bask in the sun and taste the famous European idleness.

However, their stay will be – as we can imagine – anything but restful. Why ? We would be remiss to divulge anything by revealing too much. Suffice it to say, the events depicted here ooze just as much cynicism, dark humor and social satire as they did before…in short, White Lotus DNA.

Glorious cast

It’s particularly enjoyable to see Jennifer Coolidge sinking her teeth into this character that suits her like a glove and which, let’s remember, had allowed her to get her hands on the Emmy award for best actress in a supporting role, the ‘last summer. Same thing for Aubrey Plaza, scathing at will, which is probably the best addition to an already very glorious credits.

We don’t hide it, we miss the unforgettable Armond (played by Murray Bartlett during the first season) at times in this new batch of episodes still overseen by Mike White. But we have to admit that his sacrifice was fully justified to breathe new life into the series.

The second season of white lotus will begin on Sunday evening on the airwaves of Crave.
