Canada imposes new sanctions on Iran for what it calls gross human rights abuses.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly announced on Monday that 12 senior Iranian government and law enforcement officials were being sanctioned for participating in “gross and systematic violations of human rights,” including repressing demonstrations in the west of the country.
Individuals added to the sanctions list will have their Canadian assets frozen and barred from entering the country.
Ms. Joly’s office reiterated that it is working with its partners elsewhere in the world to address the Iranian regime’s treatment of its people.
Major protests have been taking place there since last September, when 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died at the hands of the country’s vice police, allegedly because she was not wearing her veil properly.
