Canada on Friday announced sanctions against 67 individuals and nine entities for “gross and systematic violations” of human rights in several countries, including Iran, where the regime’s first execution of a protester took place.
“Dignity, freedom and justice are pillars of Canada’s policy abroad,” Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said in a statement.
“As the world witnesses the trampling of human rights in places like Russia, Iran and Myanmar, we are reminded that we can only create change by standing up and standing up for the values that are expensive,” she added.
These measures were announced on the occasion of World Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Days.
Among those affected by the sanctions are 22 senior Iranian justice, prison and law enforcement officials. Senior aides to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and some state media are also targeted.
The sanctions also concern Russia and Burma.
Six entities and 33 current and former officials in Russia were sanctioned for cracking down on citizens who spoke out against “Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and the Russian regime’s undemocratic policies.”
Finally, 12 individuals and three Myanmar entities were sanctioned for allowing the junta to attack civilians and facilitating arms deliveries to the regime.
