New Caledonia: two new deaths
Two people have been killed by police officers who were targeted by gunfire in New Caledonia. 13 people have died since the protests began in May.
Shots have just been heard near a police roadblock. In the confusion, firefighters are rushing to the scene. Clashes between several armed individuals and the police have been taking place all night. The neighborhood is tense. The GIGN has launched a major operation to arrest 13 people wanted for attempted murder. Several rifles have been seized.
According to the prosecution, gendarmes were allegedly targeted by gunfire before returning fire. Two men who were the subject of a search warrant were killed. The two victims, aged 29 and 30, were members of the Kanak tribe of Saint-Louis. Among the pro-independence parties, some speak of summary execution, others denounce a lack of dialogue. Many Caledonians are at the end of their tether. Since the start of the violence on the island last May, 13 people have been killed, including two gendarmes.
