Negotiations for a truce between Israel and Hamas ended without an agreement reached, as announced by Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday May 5. Israel subsequently intensified its bombing of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip.
A new scene of chaos on Sunday May 5. At the foot of houses and under close surveillance, firefighters are trying to control a fire. Dozens of rockets were fired by Lebanese Hezbollah into northern Israel on Saturday in response to a deadly air raid in southern Lebanon. While mediators have been trying for months to bring about a truce in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Prime Minister is not about to give in. “Capitulating to Hamas’ demands would be a terrible defeat for the State of Israel”affirmed Benjamin Netanyahu.
The closure of Al-Jazeera
At the same time, the Israeli government decided to close the Qatari channel Al-Jazeera in Israel. All equipment used to broadcast the channel’s content will be seized. A choice which is considered criminal by the channel. Following rocket fire, Kerem Shalom, the main humanitarian aid crossing point between Israel and Gaza, was also closed by the Israeli army. Discussions for a truce are at a standstill: Hamas and Israel accuse each other of preventing any agreement.
