“New Blue Sun”, André 3000

André 3000 wrote this warning on the album cover: “ No bars “. No stanzas, no rhymes. The inimitable MC from Atlanta and member of Outkast offers a first solo album in his almost thirty-year career, an instrumental one at that. On the surface, it seems like a publicity stunt, a new eccentricity on his part. Yes but no : New Blue Sun is a magnificent album of long, contemplative compositions fusing spiritual jazz, ambient music and film music. André 3000 imagined this project around the sound of his flutes, assisted by the versatile accomplice Carlos Niño, Californian musician, composer, DJ and director serving as a bridge between the jazz, electronic and experimental scenes (his recent collaboration with the pianist and singer South -African Thandi Ntuli deserves our attention). Harmonious, evocative, mysterious, New Blue Sun recalls the reveries of Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane, the musician’s collection of flutes harmonizing wonderfully with the meticulous work of his accompanists.
