Despite international pressure to soften its support for Israel, the United States once again prevented the UN Security Council from demanding a ceasefire on Tuesday February 20. “immediate” in Gaza. The draft resolution received 13 votes in favor, one abstention (United Kingdom) and one against. This is the third American veto since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.

“The message sent today to the Israelis by this veto is that they can continue to do anything with impunity”, castigated Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour. The latter denounced a veto “irresponsible and dangerous” providing yet another “shield” to Israel.

“Israeli operations must stop”

“The mistakes of today will have a price for our region and our world tomorrow (…) How will history judge you?”, for his part launched the Algerian ambassador Amar Bendjama, who worked on this text. The Algerian project was also opposed to “forced displacement of the Palestinian civilian population”, while Israel has mentioned an evacuation of civilians before a ground offensive in Rafah where 1.4 million people are crowded in the south of the Gaza Strip.

Russia and China denounced the American veto. “The human toll and humanitarian situation in Gaza are intolerable and Israeli operations must end”insisted for his part the French ambassador Nicolas de Rivière.
