On Monday February 26, farmers gathered again to make their discontent heard in Brussels. Meeting in the Belgian capital, European ministers declare that they want to act quickly to provide solutions.

After a morning of clashes, calm returned to Brussels (Belgium) on Monday February 26. Tractors have taken over the city center, causing slowdowns and traffic jams. However, in the morning, several hundred farmers carried out strong actions in front of the European Commission to express their anger at the lack of answers. “What we want is to definitively end the free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur. We want prices which compulsorily cover our production costs,” said Morgan Ody, farmer and member of the Via Campesina coordinating committee.

The vagueness persists around the Ukrainian import

Expected by the farmers, the European ministers seem to have understood the urgency of acting quickly, demanded by the demonstrators. “We need to give signals straight away to farmers, to say that something is changing, not only in the short term, but also in the medium and long term”, underlined Marc Fesneau, Minister of Agriculture. The ministers agreed to simplify access to aid from the common agricultural policy, but not enough to completely calm farmers, who are still waiting for answers from Brussels concerning imports of Ukrainian products.
