(Washington) The United States imposed sanctions Friday on four people with ties to the Islamic State (IS) group following an investigation with Turkey, according to the Treasury Department.
The sanctions target three sympathizers of a smuggling network linked to ISIS, and another person involved in establishing an ISIS training camp, the US Treasury said in a statement.
These people were based in Uzbekistan and Georgia, and at least one of them supported members of IS in Turkey, the same source said.
The coordinated action with Turkey “demonstrates our continued commitment to defending ourselves against all terrorist threats,” Brian Nelson, Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, was quoted as saying in the statement.
These sanctions mean that these individuals will no longer be allowed to carry out financial transactions with the United States and Turkey, and that their possible assets in both countries will be frozen.
Turkey, an ally of the United States and a member of NATO, has taken similar sanctions, the Treasury said.
