Netflix’s new musical that’s exploding on social media

If we are all running after time, the American songwriter Jonathan Larson has made this race the heart of his work. Of the time, he had little, victim of an aortic aneurysm at only 35 years old (which caused him death), the day before the first performance of his musical. Rent. Having become a real Broadway institution, the show will continue to live without its author for more than twelve years at the Nederlander Theater. It is to make this artist known that Lin-Manuel Miranda, young prodigy who signed the musical Hamilton and several songs for Disney (including those from the movie Vaiana), seized on this story for his first film. Headlining: Andrew Garfield, but also Vanessa Hudgens. Something to wake up Internet users, seduced by this adaptation.

Tick, Tick… Boom! is a biopic, adapted from the musical of the same title, written by Jonathan Larson. For the two works, the subject is the same: they tell the story of a young composer, without a penny in his pocket, who fights so that his show, Superbia, which he has been writing for seven years, be adapted for Broadway. But the glory is slow to arrive and he is forced to lead a life of misery, in an insanitary apartment, employed in a small restaurant to pay (with difficulty) his rent and his bills.

Jonathan Larson’s name probably doesn’t ring a bell. Yet he was awarded three Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for theatrical work for his musical. Rent, in 1996. But his tragic fate only offered him posthumous recognition which failed to cross the Atlantic.

Perhaps Lin-Manuel Miranda finds himself in this character who marked the history of Broadway. Like him, he modernized the New York stages, introducing rap culture. This gifted man wrote his first musical while in college: In the heights. It would take her less than a decade to win four Tony Awards and the Grammy for Best Musical Album. In 2015, new shine: he writes Hamilton and won the Pulitzer Prize.

“I am a musical comedy writer. One of the last of my kind”Jon Larson smiles to the audience. A sizzling image, taken by an old camcorder, shows the artist entering the stage to thunderous applause. From the first minutes of the film, a lot of information is linked. On the model of a stand-up, the hero recounts his life in broad outline. The ellipses are multiplying, the shots are short and fast … What to lose us a little.

But the magic nevertheless operates thanks to the sparkling and energetic play of Andrew Garfield. If we could see him jumping from building to building and weaving webs in Spiderman, we discover that the actor also knows how to sing and dance wonderfully. His performance is supported by other actors who have already proven themselves in music, such as Robin de Jesùs (The boys in the band) and Vanessa Hudgens. The latter, quite discreet since her success in the series of films for adolescents High School Musical, is making a comeback and has lost none of her singing talent.

If the plot takes place more than thirty years ago, it nevertheless releases timeless messages such as that of accepting failure and never losing sight of your goal. The film also offers us a plunge into the New York of the 90s and all its facets, from the lightest, like the traditional Sunday morning brunch, to the more serious, like the ravages of AIDS. Any opportunity is good to push the song even if the reality is harsh.

We have only one regret: that this musical was not released in theaters to be able to enjoy it on the big screen. On the flip side, she was able to get noticed by an audience who praised her merits on social networks. Some even added it to their ranking of the best films of the year 2021.

Already awarded several American prizes, such as that of the American Film Institute, Tick, tick … Boom! Will he join the Oscar race? It would not be a first for Netflix which had already managed to win 7 awards at the 93rd ceremony in 2021.
