For the eleventh and final day of competition, Sunday September 8, the last finals end, before a closing ceremony scheduled for 8:30 p.m. (live on France 2 and france.tv). On the program, only three French.
The three French players to watch: Nélia Barbosa, Rosario Murcia-Gangloff and Abel Aber
Only three French athletes are lined up for this last Paralympic day, starting with marathon runner Rosario Murcia-Gangloff. The oldest member of the French delegation, who will celebrate her 60th birthday on September 23, participated in the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992, with the able-bodied, before becoming visually impaired following massive dehydration during the 1994 European Championships and lining up for the Paralympic Games in London in 2012. The French athlete, in the T12 category, for visual impairment, will start at 8:30 a.m.
A few hours later, the big chance of a medal of the day rests on the shoulders of Nélia Barbosa. At 25, the French kayaker is entered in the 200m final (KL3) without having had to go through the semi-finals in the morning. Silver medalist in Tokyo, she in fact achieved, on Friday, the second best time in the series (48″50), behind the British Laura Sugar (48″14), big favorite for gold. At 33, crowned in Tokyo, but also world champion 2021, 2022 and 2023, she will be in the boat to beat. But the Frenchwoman dreams “to do better” than its second place in Japan.
For his part, Abel Aber will introduce a new paracanoe discipline to the French public: va’a. This traditional race, originating from Polynesia, has made its debut on the program of the Tokyo Games in 2021 and is specific to the Paralympic Games. The format chosen is a 200-meter sprint, in Vaires-sur-Marnes (Seine-et-Marne), far from the coast of Tahiti, where surfing was contested during the Olympics. The Frenchman, already a silver medalist at the European Championships this summer, posted the seventh time in his category, the VL3, for athletes with full trunk function and partial leg function, in the heats. On Sunday, his semi-final will start at 10:56 a.m., before a possible final at 12:41 p.m.
The other two events not to be missed: weightlifting and wheelchair basketball
The paraweightlifting finals for men up to 107 kg will follow in the morning at 9 a.m., then the women up to 86 kg at 10:35 a.m., before the heaviest categories will be decided in the afternoon: at 2 p.m. for women over 86 kg and then at 3:35 p.m. for men over 107 kg.
In the meantime, the paracanoe semi-finals and finals will punctuate the morning between 10am and noon. The day will end with the women’s wheelchair basketball final, which will be played at 1.45pm between the United States and the Netherlands, after a small final at 10.30am between China and Canada.
