Germany is ready to “massively help” its neighbors, especially Poland, in the event of an influx of refugees fleeing the Russian invasion.

A request for international assistance. The Polish government has announced that it has asked the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), on Thursday February 24, to activate article 4 of the Alliance treaty following the Russian attack on the Ukraine. The latter provides for consultation of its members in the event of a threat to the security of one of the parties. Lithuania and Estonia then added their voice to the Polish request.

The ambassadors of the 30 member countries of NATO must meet urgently Thursday morning in Brussels, announced a spokesperson for the Alliance. After the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, NATO decided to deploy recently reinforced multinational battalions in Poland and the Baltic countries.

Lithuania, a neighbor of Poland and Belarus but not of Ukraine, also declared Thursday that it would impose a state of emergency on its territory. “Today I will sign a decree imposing a state of emergency”said Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda after a meeting of the National Defense Council.
The Moldovan President also announced that he had asked parliament to declare a state of emergency in the countrybordering Ukraine. Moldova has also closed its airspace. Belarus has also closed part of its own.
