In Chile, entire neighborhoods were ravaged by flames. For 4 days, fires have affected the coastal region of Valparaiso in the center of the country.
The flames are just a few meters from the road. Inside a bus, the tension is palpable. In the tourist region of Valparaiso, entire neighborhoods were devastated. In a few minutes on Friday, everything went up in flames. “We have nothing left, we have to start from scratch, everything happened quickly, very very quickly”, deplores a resident, with tears in her eyes. For the fourth consecutive day, nearly 3,000 Chilean firefighters and soldiers are fighting dozens of fires in the center but also in the south of the country. A new curfew has been introduced to limit traffic and facilitate rescue operations for victims. Hundreds of people are still missing.
The biggest tragedy since 2010
Survivors feel completely abandoned. According to the president who visited the region, this is the greatest tragedy that Chile has experienced since the earthquake which left more than 500 dead in 2010.
