Discussions continue between Paris and London over fishing licenses in British waters, Monday November 1. On the side of the fishermen, worry and anxiety are starting to set in.
Negotiations continue between France, the United Kingdom and the European Union regarding licenses to fish in British waters. To ease tensions, Jersey announced to issue 49 temporary licenses to France. Concern remains on the island for fishermen. “It’s very worrying, because if they close the checkpoints in Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine), we will be completely stopped. We will no longer be able to buy fish, nor [en] export”, says one of them.
If French ships do not receive more sustainable permits, France has threatened to prevent British ships from unloading their goods in French ports and to strengthen customs controls on trucks. “Nobody is going to win. There will only be losers”, laments a British fisherman. On the French side, the wait continues, but anxiety begins to take precedence over hope. Some boats remain anchored to the quayside. 30% of the turnover of French fishing depends on British waters.
