Negotiations to try to salvage the Iranian nuclear deal are entering their home stretch. Discussions will resume on Tuesday in Vienna, Austria, the European Union announced on Monday, February 7, in a press release. The talks, which began in the spring of 2021, are between the Iranians and the remaining parties to the agreement (Germany, China, France, the United Kingdom and Russia), with the indirect participation of the Americans.
The protagonists left each other at the end of January, calling for “political decisions” after the “progress” made during the month. “After consultations in capitals with their respective governments, the participants will continue the discussions”sums up the EU press release.
The negotiations aim to implement a “mutual return” of Washington and Tehran in this agreement, the aim of which is to prevent Iran from acquiring the atomic bomb. At the initiative of Donald Trump, the United States withdrew in 2018.
The United States warned last week that only “very few weeks” to get along. In an interview at Washington PostGerman Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned Iran: “Now is the time for decisions, not for dragging out the process.”
For its part, Tehran returned the ball to the Americans. “It is natural that the Islamic Republic of Iran expects the necessary decisions to be made on the other side, especially in Washington.”the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday.
“We hope that the US delegation will return to Vienna with clear instructions on how to fulfill its obligations on the lifting of sanctions”he said, pending“concrete commitments”.
