I am a senior, daily user of the bus. I am very grateful for the new free public transportation policy for seniors in Montreal. Although I am a member of the board of directors of the Quebec Association for the Defense of the Rights of Retired and Pre-retired Persons for Ahuntsic–Saint-Laurent, I am writing this letter in a personal capacity. It is unacceptable, in an advanced and wealthy society like ours, that certain bus stops are not cleared in winter. Today, even though I am not disabled, I was unable to get off at a bus stop in downtown Montreal because there was a patch of sharp ice, without gravel or sand, at least one square meter. I couldn’t pass either way when getting off the bus. The driver realized the challenge I was facing and kindly offered to let me go a little further. How many people will break a limb and end up in already congested emergency rooms before the City and the boroughs take the necessary measures to make bus stops safer with regard to snow removal in winter?
