The fifth wave hit at least a quarter of Quebecers, or 2 million people. Since the start of the pandemic, nearly half of Quebecers have been affected by COVID-19, revealed the acting national director of public health, Dr. Luc Boileau.
Hospitalizations and the number of cases of infections have been falling steadily for several days. In a press briefing on Wednesday, Dr. Boileau suggested that the worst of the crisis was behind us. “We are no longer at war in big battles like we just went through,” he said.
According to Public Health estimates, since the beginning of December, at least 2 million people have contracted COVID-19 in Quebec, including one million since the start of 2022. All in all, since the start of the pandemic is between 40% and 50% of Quebecers who would have been affected by the virus.
When someone has been infected, the risk of being re-infected a second time “within 60 to 90 days” is “extremely unlikely”, he said. “The risk is always there. The risk is calculated, however. Everyone should be part of the equation. »
During his press briefing, Dr. Luc Boileau was accompanied by Marie-France Raynault, from the General Directorate of Public Health of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, and Jean Longtin, a microbiologist.
