The assessment of the rebound of the Covid-19 epidemic in Shanghai increased on Sunday April 24. Local authorities announced the death of 39 people in 24 hours, which brings to at least 87 the total number of deaths since the start of strict confinement in the economic capital. China, which is facing its worst epidemic outbreak in two years, has since the beginning of April confined almost all of the 25 million in the city, the epicenter of the contagion.

Since the start of the pandemic, the country has managed to limit the total toll to less than 5,000 dead and less than 200,000 contaminations, if we stick to the official figures, which are much lower than the international counts. But the Omicron variant has hit the residents of Shanghai hard, with nearly half a million cases since early March. Despite strict confinement, nearly 22,000 new infections were recorded in the city on Sunday. The low mortality is a concern, especially since vaccination rates are low among the oldest.

More than a thousand kilometers away, the capital Beijing has also reported 22 cases and warned that an action “urgent” needed to stop the contagion. “The situation is serious, the whole city must act without delay”an official said on Saturday, noting that the virus probably spread from “invisible way” the last days.
