nearly 300 dead and a thousand injured in a train accident

For hundreds of meters, the remains of the three trains are scattered. 23 wagons derailed on Friday June 2 in India. The trains, with 2,000 passengers on board, were traveling at 120 km/h. Survivors describe a terrible shock. “I woke up (…) I realized that all the passengers in my compartment were above me. I was literally buried”says one of them.

The scene of the accident is not yet clear. It all started with a passenger train from Calcutta (India). A signal, lit by mistake, would have caused him to change lanes. He then hit a freight train, present on the track. Under the shock, wagons detach and will hit another train which arrives in front.

288 dead according to a provisional report

The provisional toll is 288 dead and more than 900 injured. Amid the chaos, locals try to help the victims. The doctors were overwhelmed very quickly. The anger is enormous in the country, while several tens of billions of euros have been invested to improve the rail network. However, security has improved in this country which welcomes between 20 and 25 million travelers a day.
