It’s a small gesture that saves lives: giving blood. On the occasion of World Blood Donor Daythe French Blood Establishment (EFS) organized several collections throughout France. One of them set up in Mayenne for a day. “Blood supplies are still low“, explains Marie-Claude Rouzière, president of the departmental union of blood donors in Mayenne.Currently, in France as in the Pays de la Loire, we have barely 12 days of reserve, we are below the fifteen days of security“, she specifies. A lack which corresponds to approximately 30,000 blood bags throughout France.
The French Blood Establishment is therefore seeking to increase stocks before the summer. “It’s a time when sometimes we forget to go donate blood, because we’re doing something else“, continues Marie-Claude Rouzière. “But even during the holidays the patients wait for this blood product, which can only be given by humans since we do not know how to replace it.” They were nearly 200 to go to Mayenne to make this donation this Tuesday, June 14.

Some tips before donating blood
“Anyone can give”, says Marie-Claude Rouzière. Justbe between 18 and 70 years old, weigh more than 50 kilos, and that’s all. Of course there is some contraindications : people who had a tattoo less than four months before the donation, those who had a fever during the last two weeks or those who had risky sexual intercourse in the last months.
The president of the departmental union of blood donors in Mayenne also takes the opportunity to donate some tips for donating blood in the best conditions : eat normally before coming, “it is important not to come on an empty stomach and it is also necessary to remember to hydrate well, it thins the blood and it makes the transfusion easier“.”Do not hesitate to come accompanied by someone who often gives for the first time, it can be reassuring“, also advises Marie-Claude Rouzière.
