While the government announced a possible reduction in the health protocol at school after the February holidays, nearly 19,000 classes were closed due to Covid-19 on Thursday, according to figures communicated Friday January 21 by the ministry. More than 450,000 cases of Covid were confirmed among students and 30,000 among National Education staff.

In detail, the number of closed classes stood at 18,786 on Thursday, a new highest level of closures since spring 2020, after 14,380 last week. This figure includes classes that are closed due to cases of Covid-19, and those that are closed due to unreplaced teacher absences. This represents 3.56% of the country’s 527,200 classrooms.

Before the Christmas holidays, only 2,970 classes were closed, then this figure rose quickly after the start of the school year under the effect of the Omicron wave, despite the removal of the rule of a class closure for three cases of Covid.

The health protocol in schools has evolved several times since the beginning of January. Pupils with contact cases at school must now undergo only three self-tests, the obligation to present an antigen or PCR test having been removed.
