Nearly 119,000 Hydro-Québec subscribers deprived of power Monday morning

Nearly 119,000 Quebec homes were without electricity around 7:30 a.m. Monday, according to Hydro-Québec.

The two regions most affected by these power outages were those of Capitale-Nationale and Estrie, with respectively more than 50,000 and nearly 40,000 subscribers plunged into darkness. In Chaudière-Appalaches, more than 12,400 customers did not have electricity; in Mauricie and the Centre-du-Québec region, there were more than 6,000.

A spokesperson for the public affairs department of the state company, Francis Labbé, explains that these five regions most affected by the outages are those where the snowfall in recent hours has been the most abundant.

The heavy snow falling on the vegetation caused tree branches to break and fall on electrical wires.

Mr. Labbé reported that Hydro-Québec hoped that restoration of most outages could occur during the day on Monday.

At dawn, the state corporation carried out an inventory of the resources available in the regions which were not affected by the outages, in particular those of Montreal and Montérégie, so that they could move to the disaster regions in order to help their colleagues working on recovery.
