NDP wants national school food program in budget

(Ottawa) New Democrats are pushing for the Liberal government to fund a national school food program in the next federal budget.

The party claims to have already spoken to the Liberals about it and the minority government seems open to the idea.

The Liberal government has opened talks in 2022 with teachers, parents, children and young people on a national school food policy.

New Democrats say lunch programs, like those that already exist in British Columbia under a provincial NDP government, can ensure children receive a healthy meal every day.

The New Democratic Party has agreed to support the minority Liberal government in key parliamentary votes until 2025 – including on the budget – in exchange for progress on their shared priorities.

The Liberals will release the next federal budget on April 16.
