NDP refuses to say if it would maintain carbon pricing increases

(Coquitlam) New Democratic Party Leader Jagmeet Singh has refused to say whether or not he would maintain planned carbon pricing increases if he becomes prime minister.

The cost is expected to reach $170 per ton by 2030.

Mr. Singh said Monday that his party will present its own plan, but he would not comment on maintaining the current system.

Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre has made abolishing carbon pricing a central point of his campaign, saying it contributes to increasing the cost of living for Canadians.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau instead believes that this measure puts more money in the pockets of most taxpayers, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

While the leaders of the other two major parties remain firm on their stance, Mr. Singh has refused to explicitly say whether or not he supports the current carbon pricing framework, although he was in favor during the election campaign of 2019.

On Monday, he deflected questions on the subject by attacking Mr. Poilievre, accusing him of having no environmental plan.

“The plan we will present will be fair to workers, will tackle major polluters and reduce our emissions,” he assured.
