NCAA | The next step is coming for Lane Hutson

Lane Hutson has never had a problem staying in the present moment.

The defender is currently focused on helping Boston University (BU) win its sixth U.S. college title at the NCAA Frozen Four. BU will face Denver in the semifinals on Thursday night.

However, Hutson also knows he will soon have to make a big decision.

Considered by many to be the Montreal Canadiens’ best prospect, the 20-year-old could sign his contract and play his first NHL game by next week – regardless of what happens at the St-Paul tournament, in Minnesota.

“I think I have a great opportunity in front of me to win a national championship for a school that has done so much for me,” Hutson said. When the season ends, we will evaluate what we are going to do for the next step, or if we prefer to stay here (at the university).

“There are so many guys that are in that position, but I feel like either way I’ll be in a good situation. »

Selected by Montreal at 62e 2022 draft rank – he has slipped down the board due to his small stature – the 5-foot-10, 162-pounder sits at 11e NCAA scoring leader in 2023-24 with 15 goals and 34 assists for 49 points in 37 games.

Hutson helped the United States win gold at the 2024 World Junior Hockey Championship after winning bronze the year before. He was named assistant captain after a 48-point campaign in his first college season, which included an appearance in the Frozen Four where his team lost in the semifinals.

“He leads by example with his play, his work ethic and his competitive spirit,” said BU Terriers head coach Jay Pandolfo, who had a long NHL playing career. He feels more comfortable being heard this year.

“He is developing his game. He was very good defensively at the Regional Championships. He continues to improve. Offensively, he will always be good. This is an exceptional year for us. »

The same can be said of many of the players who will take to the ice at the Xcel Energy Center for this annual event which will also include a semi-final Thursday between Boston College and the University of Michigan.

The title match will take place on Saturday. Huston could join the Canadian as soon as his tournament ends.

Every year, NCAA stars must balance winning a national title and deciding whether to stay or go once the college season ends.

Pandolfo has no doubt about Hutson’s state of mind.

“That’s how he’s programmed,” said the 15-year NHL veteran. He takes things day by day. »

But the next step – the possibility of donning the Canadiens jersey at the Bell Center – certainly crossed his mind.

“They are some of the smartest fans in the world,” Hutson said. I like their competitive spirit. Being able to play in front of these fans one day would definitely be one of my goals.

“And that’s something I’m looking forward to.” »

But only after resolving some unfinished business.
