The madeleine would have been created in 1755 in the castle of Commercy. King Stanislas of Poland received Voltaire and Madame de Châtelet there. For the occasion, the king asked his cook, Madeleine, to make a unique cake. The name Madeleine comes from a most commonly spread story: Marie de Magdala or Marie La Magdaléenne, also known as Marie-Madeleine or Madeleine, a former prostitute from Magdala (a city in Israel on the shores of Lake Tiberias) .
