(Ottawa) Although major floods are occurring more frequently, Canadians remain uninformed of the risk they face. Yet 80% of major Canadian cities are located entirely or partially in flood-prone areas, according to the federal government’s first report to paint a picture of the risks associated with natural disasters.
Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver are all located in high risk flood zones.
Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair unveiled the document Thursday as Quebec and British Columbia grapple with flooding and Alberta experiences devastating wildfires.
This first national risk assessment focuses on three types of natural disasters: earthquakes, forest fires and floods.
More details to come.
