His time at the head of the Atlantic Alliance will have been marked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Secretary General of NATO, the Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg, does not wish to extend his mandate once again beyond the term scheduled for October, announced a spokeswoman for the North Atlantic alliance on Sunday 12 February.
In March 2022, after the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine, NATO leaders decided to extend the Norwegian official’s mandate until September 30, 2023. Jens Stoltenberg has been head of NATO since 2014. From now on, “he has no intention of asking for a further extension of his mandate”said Oana Lungescu, spokesperson for the organization. “The term of the Secretary General was extended three times and he served for a total of almost nine years”she noted.
The current Secretary General is the first head of NATO from a country bordering Russia. His tenure began amid confrontations between Moscow and kyiv, months after Russia’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula. His years at the head of the alliance will have been marked by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but also by the management of the Afghan crisis and that of American criticism when Donald Trump was in power.
