National Post columnist Rex Murphy dies of cancer at age 77

THE National Post announced Thursday the death of columnist Rex Murphy.

The newspaper said in an obituary published on its website that Mr. Murphy died at age 77 following a battle with cancer.

He was born outside of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and graduated from Memorial University. He also studied at Oxford University after winning the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.

Mr. Murphy hosted the show Cross Country Checkup on CBC Radio for more than two decades, before leaving his post in 2015.

Later in life, he became a staunch critic of the federal Liberal Party and the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

He was also an outspoken opponent of “wokism”, a progressive ideology sensitive to systemic inequalities, and claimed in his column that conservative voices like his were being sidelined.

Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper also expressed his condolences on social networks.

“Rex Murphy was one of the smartest and most fiercely free-spirited journalists in the country’s history,” he wrote on the X platform.
