(Montreal) An exhibition presenting a collection of engravings by Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn opens Thursday at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ).
Titled Rembrandt. Engravings from the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningenthis unique exhibition will allow visitors to discover no less than 80 engravings by the great master of the 17e century specially loaned by the Boijmans Van Beuningen museum located in the Netherlands.
If we know the Baroque artist today mainly for his paintings marked by emotion and movement, he was celebrated during his lifetime for his work in engraving in which his mastery of chiaroscuro is found. He also created more than 300 during his life, using the complex technique of “etching” that the exhibition takes the time to explain.
Self-portraits, portraits, genre scenes, landscapes, mythology, religious scenes and others: the works presented in Quebec reflect the great diversity of themes explored by the artist through a selection that includes several of his masterpieces.
In order to highlight the influence exercised by Rembrandt throughout the centuries and to put these engravings in dialogue with Quebec creations, the MNBAQ has also included around fifteen works from its own collections in the exhibition.
The exhibition will be held at the Pierre Lassonde pavilion of the MNBAQ, from April 25 to September 2, 2024.
