Castellanos helps Phillies tie series against Mets
Nick Castellanos closed the books in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Philadelphia Phillies avoided the worst to defeat the New York Mets 7-6 on Sunday night.
While Trea Turner and Bryce Harper had just drawn a walk after two outs, Castellanos dropped the ball into left field to allow Turner to score the winning run.
The Phillies thought they had done enough to win in the top of the ninth inning, leading 6-4, but Matt Strahm gave up a two-run long ball to Mark Vientos.
Despite everything, the Philadelphia squad created a 1-1 tie in this series of sections of the National. The third clash will take place Tuesday evening in New York.
The heart of the Phillies’ lineup stood out during this second duel, after being more timid in the first game. Turner, Harper, Castellanos and Bryson Stott had eight of their team’s 10 hits.
Jeff Hoffman (1-1) signed the victory after coming in relief of Strahm, who had a second difficult outing in a row.
Starter Cristopher Sanchez allowed two runs, five hits and a walk in five innings on the mound before the Phillies took over.
The loss went to Tylor Megill (0-1), who was unable to force extra innings even though he had the first two outs in the ninth.
Luis Severino allowed three runs and six hits in six innings of work for the Mets. He also pitched for six innings five days ago during the series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The New Yorkers took the lead in the third inning, when Vientos hit a two-run homer off Sanchez. Severino limited the damage and saw Pete Alonso give him another point in the sixth with a solo long ball.
The Phillies, however, woke up upon their return to bat. Harper scored a resounding four-goal haul that cut the lead to 3-2. Castellanos followed with a solo home run that put both teams back to square one.
The celebrations were, however, short-lived. In the top of the seventh inning, Brandon Nimmo calmed the noisy crowd at Citizens Bank Park by giving the Mets the lead again with a home run to right-center field.
Seeking to keep his team’s lead, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza called on his stopper Edwin Diaz. The Phillies were not intimidated, however.
With Harper and Castellanos on the field, Stott hit a triple down the right field line to give the Phillies a 5-4 lead. He crossed the plate following an option from JT Realmuto.
Bohm left behind
Before the game, the Phillies announced that they had waived star third baseman Alec Bohm.
Bohm was shut out in four visits to the plate in his team’s 6-2 loss in the first meeting. In the second game, he was shut out in two appearances.
Edmundo Sosa replaced him on the third cushion.
Bohm posted a .280 batting average this season, with 15 home runs, 97 RBIs and 44 doubles, but hit a slump toward the end of the season.
He concluded the season with a streak of two hits in 27 visits to the plate.

Shohei Ohtani homers and Dodgers beat Padres
Shohei Ohtani hit a three-run homer in his postseason debut and the Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 7-5 in their Section Series opener Saturday.
Manny Machado’s two-run homer off Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto, also making his first playoff appearance, gave the Padres a 3-0 lead early in the game.
But Ohtani quickly saved the Dodgers with his home run that tied the score 3-3 in the second inning. The great Japanese star hit the ball far and wide, with Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax looking on and fans chanting “MVP!” MVP! “.
“I could really feel the intensity in the stadium before the game started and I really enjoyed it,” Ohtani said through a translator. It was quite exciting. »
“When he gets those opportunities, you feel like he’s going to succeed every time,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
The Padres regained the lead, 5-3, but the Dodgers quickly responded again with three runs in the fourth inning.
Tommy Edman scored on a bad pitch from reliever Adrian Morejon, who took the loss. Ohtani singled while smashing his bat and then scored, along with Mookie Betts, on Teoscar Hernandez’s single off Jeremiah Estrada to give the Dodgers a 6-5 lead.
“It’s really hard for a team to be able to feel comfortable in the first game of the playoffs, especially with a long rest period, but I think everyone really contributed,” Ohtani said.
It was their first lead in a playoff game since the seventh inning of Game 4 against the Padres in 2022. The Dodgers were swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks last year.
Trailing 7-5, the Padres had the tying runs on the trail with two outs in the ninth. Fernando Tatis Jr. singled against Blake Treinen before seeing Jurickson Profar walk.
Machado then came to the plate, but he was struck out on three. Treinen got the save.
