The reduction of nearly a billion dollars in the budget of the Ministry of National Defense will affect the capabilities of the Armed Forces, estimate the highest leader of the Defense and several experts.
Chief of the Defense Staff, General Wayne Eyre, confirmed this figure to MPs on the House of Commons National Defense Committee on Thursday.
Mr. Eyre believes that there is no way to cut this amount from the budget without having an effect on the Canadian Armed Forces.
15 billion to save
The federal government announced plans to make savings of more than $15 billion in its spring budget, including cutting contracted services by 15% and departmental spending by 3%.
Having become President of the Treasury Board over the summer, Anita Anand told her colleagues that they had to make these reductions by October.
Cuts to military contracts will affect areas such as equipment maintenance and engineering, and reduce the readiness of the Armed Forces, says David Perry, president of the Canadian Institute of Global Affairs.
