National Bank Open | Eugenie Bouchard collapses in Toronto after having a match point

(Toronto) Quebec’s Eugenie Bouchard was on track to reach the second round of qualifying at the National Bank Toronto Open on Sunday, but everything fell apart in the second set.


Bouchard had a match point while leading 7-5, 5-2, but Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima held on to win 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.

Canadians Carol Zhao and Stacey Fung advanced to the second round of qualifying.

Zhao, of Richmond Hill, Ont., replaced Hailey Baptiste, who withdrew due to transportation issues. She beat France’s Kristina Mladenovic 7-5, 6-1.

Fung, from Vancouver, defeated Germany’s Jule Niemeier in three sets of 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

The other two Canadians in the running were eliminated from the start.

Toronto’s Katherine Sebov lost 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 to Japan’s Nao Hibino and Montreal’s Carson Branstine lost 7-6 (3), 6-2 to Russia’s Erika Andreeva.

Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Rebecca Marino of Vancouver and Marina Stakusic of Toronto are already in the main draw of the National Bank Open.
