(Colorado Springs) Reigning Olympic champion Nathan Chen has to withdraw from the World Figure Skating Championships this season due to a recurring injury that has affected him since winning the gold medal in Beijing.

The reigning three-time world champion will be replaced on Team USA by Camden Pulkinen when the Championships get under way next week in Montpellier, France.

The 22-year-old skater was one of the big stars of the Beijing Games where his free skate to the air of Rocketman propelled him to the top step of the podium, which had eluded him four years earlier, in South Korea.

Chen hasn’t lost at Worlds since 2017, when he finished sixth. He wanted to become the first skater to win four world titles in a row since American Scott Hamilton, from 1981 to 1984.
