The theatrical release of the biopic of Napoleon Bonaparte by the British filmmaker was preceded by mixed reviews, to say the least. The film topped the box office in France at the end of the first week of release.

Napoleon by Ridley Scott topped the box office in France for its first week of operation, according to CBO figures compiled on Wednesday November 30. The nearly $200 million film, which sees actor Joaquin Phoenix wearing the Emperor’s cocked hat, attracted nearly one in three spectators this week. In total, 764,000 visitors discovered the biopic in 743 theaters.
Even before its release, the film had been the subject of severe criticism and controversy for the liberties taken inith the real life of Napoleon. Stung, Ridley Scott even responded, in an interview with the BBC: “The French don’t even like themselves“.
“Hunger Games” in second place
The feature film leaves in its wake the last part of Hunger Games : the ballad of the serpent and the songbirdby Francis Lawrence which had 370,000 admissions (983,000 in total two weeks after its release). The boy and the heronthe Japanese animated film by master Hayao Miyazaki, slips to third place on the podium with 138,000 admissions (1.3 million after 4 weeks of release).
