Beijing, which considers the autonomous island to be part of its territory, has started military exercises on an unprecedented scale to protest Ms Pelosi’s visit to Taipei.
Chinese ballistic missiles have thus fallen into Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) for the first time, Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said on Thursday.
As soon as the Chinese maneuvers were announced, Tokyo, a close ally of Washington, had expressed its “concern”.
Ms. Pelosi, 82, whose first visit to Japan since 2015, is due to meet Friday morning with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, according to the public television channel NHK.
