Thousands of residents of Nagorno-Karabakh are being forced to flee their homes in a hurry, as Azerbaijani forces strengthen their grip. Nearly 7,000 people have already reached Armenia.

These are the first refugees of Nagorno-Karabakh to enter Armenia. Sunday, September 24, several hundred women, children and elderly people arrived at the reception center in Kornidzor (Armenia). They are still in shock, after the blitzkrieg waged last week by Azerbaijan against the enclave populated mainly by Armenians. They told us: either you leave or you take an Azerbaijan passport“, confides a displaced Armenian.

A mass exodus

HAS Stepanakertthe capital of Nagorno-Karabakhresidents are preparing to leave on their own. Armenia expects a massive exodus of 120,000 inhabitants, already suffocated by the blockade imposed for months by the Azerbaijani president. The first refugees to be evacuated were on the front lines during the fighting.

Failing to have prevented the Baku offensive, Russia, which has peacekeepers in the enclave, is broadcasting images of humanitarian aid that it is providing to civilians in Nagorno-Karabakh. In Armenia, the Prime Minister describes his historic alliance with Russia as ineffective.
