Nadal could end his career at the Laver Cup

Rafael Nadal said on Monday that he will participate in the Laver Cup in September in Berlin, in what could be one of the last tournaments of his prestigious tennis career.

Nadal had previously indicated that 2024 was possibly going to be his last year on tour and mentioned last week that his second-round loss to Australian Alex de Minaur at the Barcelona Open — which he has won 12 times in his career — was “probably my last (match) here.” »

“At this stage of my career, I really want to get back on the court and take advantage of every opportunity that is offered to me,” Nadal said in a press release.

The 37-year-old Spaniard has been slowed by numerous injuries in recent years, and he has only played five official matches so far this season — three in Brisbane in January, and two in Barcelona last week.

The Laver Cup, which will take place from September 20 to 22, is a men’s tennis team tournament that pits Team Europe against Team World in a competition similar to the Ryder Cup in golf.

Nadal and Roger Federer played doubles at the Laver Cup in London in 2022, in the legendary Swiss tennis player’s final career match before he officially announced his retirement.
