A mysterious disease worries. US authorities have opened an investigation after the unexplained deaths of five children. They suffered from a severe inflammation of the liver. The WHO has declared at least 230 cases of severe acute hepatitis in children.

Part of the United Kingdom, a mysterious childhood hepatitis has been spreading across the planet for a month. 228 cases reported in 20 countries according to the WHO, including two in France. America, Asia and Europe are affected. Each time, the disease occurs in children under 10 years old, in good health at the start, with sometimes severe symptoms: jaundice, diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain. However, no usual hepatitis virus was detected in these children.

The most common causes of hepatitis, which are viruses A, B, C, D and E have not been found, after analysis of these new cases“, explains Enrique Perez, incident manager at the Pan American office of the WHO. Research continues to try to understand the origin of this disease. At least one child died of this unknown hepatitis, others had to undergo a liver transplant.
