“My poor, I know very well what you are going through, my cat died last week”, Bruce Toussaint returns to Lea Salamé on the crazy condolence messages he may have received!

Saturday April 8, 2023, Léa Salamé was surrounded by several personalities such as comedians Arnaud Ducret, Nawell Madani, producer Dimitri Rassam or the star presenter of BFM TV, Bruce Toussaint. The latter was promoting his book, Fortunately, she did not suffer, in which he recounts the sudden and unexpected death of his mother in 2021, at the age of 72. She suffered a heart attack and suddenly collapsed in the middle of the street.

“My mom’s death really changed my life. I’ve become someone else since”he confided. “After the death of his parents, one becomes a small child again, a person who no longer has his bearings”. In 2016, the journalist had to face the death of his father, swept away by skin cancer. “They say it’s in the nature of things [de perdre ses parents], but in reality, it is anything but natural. It’s even the other way around.”

His proposal adopted by the government?

Bruce Toussaint, in his book, gives advice on the messages of condolence often “rotten”. “I say it with kindness and tenderness because it’s said with a lot of kindness but sometimes you can get messages like: ‘Poor, I know very well what you are going through, my cat died last week so I’m in a terrible state myself, I kiss you, I’ll call you as soon as I’m better’. I’m barely exaggerating”he expressed himself. “Try to keep it simple, short…”he added.

Following his interview with Léa Salamé, he indicated that he had been contacted by members of the government concerning his proposal to extend bereavement leave. “We talk a lot about the end of life, so there is a bill that will be written in the coming weeks and the idea would perhaps be to integrate into this bill the proposal that I am making to increase bereavement leave […] I don’t know if it’s going to happen, but it’s entirely possible.”
