“My Light, My Destroyer,” Cassandra Jenkins

New Yorker Cassandra Jenkins was already on our radar when the reveal came out. An Overview on Phenomenal Nature (2021). She will be more talked about thanks to this exquisite third album which broadens her folk-pop sound palette by integrating new wave sounds (Delphinium Blue) or even southern rock in the Wilco style (Clams Casinopowerful Aurora, IL). But beyond the sound quality of the album, her calm and silky voice, even, it is the singer-songwriter who shines, her way of constructing a story with beautifully written songs (” Outside my window I saw two doves / Wrapped up in filthy and true love / The walls are blushing landlord pink / The dishes pile up, my heart sink “, verse of Petco) and evocative interludes, planting the intriguing story at the heart of the album Betelgeuseinstrumental, ambient and jazzy, crossed by a snippet of conversation. My Light, My Destroyer: the nice surprise of the summer. Jenkins will be in concert on September 27 at the Ministère, as part of the Pop Montréal festival.
