Having become more and more expensive, especially for retirees, mutual funds are less and less accessible for the French. Could we do without mutual funds and rely solely on Social Security? Reporting.
Mutuals are essential for most of the expenses related to the health of the French, but they are now in the sights of the government, which wants to give greater importance to Social Security and the Vitale card. If some mutuals are perceived as being too expensive, 96% of French people have complementary health insurance.
Retirees are the main victims of the system, as their pensions do not follow the curve of increases. Their contributions would represent 11% of their total income. A figure which could continue to climb and reach 16% in 2040. For Daniel Rosenweg, author of a book on mutuals, it is unfair. “When you retire, you lose nearly 40% of your income. When you lose 40% of your income, the mutual will tell you ‘You are starting to cost us a lot more because you are a big risk’“, he explains. According to the mutuals, the Health Insurance will not be able to compensate and cover most of our expenses.
