France 2 is interested this week in first names in songs. Thursday, December 28, the Nicolas are in the spotlight with one of Sylvie Vartan’s greatest hits, a love song with Slavic sounds.

Obviously, the song Nicholas must tell the story of Sylvie Vartan’s first love. But here, the first name is less important than the origin of the music. The original version comes from Hungary. Elmegyek, by Péter Máté, was not a success. Everything changed with the tailor-made adaptation made for Sylvie Vartan. Everything comes together to make it an autobiography, in appearance at least: the French high school that we imagine in Bulgaria, and the Maritza, the river that flows north of Sofia.

Nicholas by William Sheller

“Obviously, it’s not a biographical song since Sylvie, when she left Bulgaria, she was only eight years old. Often, we asked her, have you seen Nicholas ? While obviously this Nicholas does not exist”explains Benoit Cachin, the author of Sylvie Vartan, the most beautiful to sing (Ed. Gründ). THE Nicholas by William Sheller, on the other hand, is indeed autobiographical. This child who is abandoned and who wishes to return home is in reality most certainly little William.
